The Surnames above are my family names--most of whom emigrated to the
United States from Deutsch Schutzen, Burgenland, Austria
(or Nemetovo--Vas country of Old Hungary) through Ellis Island
 in the early 1900's.

Many came to work in the United States and then returned to their
native Deutsch Schutzen. My Maternal Grandparents stayed in the United States until
1921 and then returned to Deutsch Schutzen. They re-entered the United States in the early 1923--this time permanently. Although the names are of German derivation, my search is centered in Austria/Hungary, before borders were changed, before the end of the Hapsburg Empire.

The project is extensive and brick walls, missing ship's manifests and lost records
are some of the obstacles I have encountered. I remember my Grandparents strength,
their fortitude and perseverance and I continue searching.

After years of thinking about exploring and documenting our family history for prosperity,
this project was born one evening while speaking with my niece and Godchild, Tracy.
It has become a labor of love and a wealth of pride in a family I'm honored to call my own.

It is my intention, though these pages to not only document my family's journey and new
beginnings here in the United States, but to also trace my family's history in Deutsch Schutzen.
It is also my intention to show within these pages a bit of the history of that beautiful country
my immigrant Grandparents and Parents left behind.

For my Children, for my Grandchildren, for their children and all the future generations
of my family to come--I dedicate these pages, these memories, these thoughts.
I love you with all my heart.

Update: December, 2004

With the help of a wonderful stranger who resides in Germany; who out of the goodness of his
heart contacted me and forwarded to me a history and family lineage dating back to the early 1800's/late 1700's I have added more information to these pages.

Though his generosity, I now have information dating back further then I ever believed I'd be able to possess.  I not only have family names dating back 5 generations, but I have places of residence and copies of church records of my lineage.

To you, Mr. Schwab, I owe a great debt of gratitude. Thank you so much for helping a
stranger rekindle something she thought lost forever--her heritage.

Through Mr. Schwab's research the following family names have been found.  I am continuing my research of these names through records in Hungary, as well as Austria.

Hofmeister, Kopfenstein, Schmidt, Czinter, Pinter,

Weber. Rigier, Pehr, Walther,

Maisser (listed on papers in old German script-Mai??er), Kornfeind
