Of my Father
and to all the men (and their families) who
served on these same ships---this is for
you.......
Originally I
had no intention of taking my Dad's site
this far. However, I received an email
from the son of a fellow crew member of my
Dad's on the USS Beryl. He'd found my
site about my Dad while searching for
information on the ship his Father served on
during World War II. That email
rekindled in me a desire to find out more
about the ships on which my father served,
as well as his time in the service.
Since that initial email, I've also been in
touch with a gentlemen who served aboard the
USS Schley with my Dad.
In March, 2002 I filled out forms and sent
them to the appropriate agency to get my
Dad's Naval Service Records, and also
forwarded my request to my local
congressman. Thank you New York State
Senator Sweeney for taking the time to
procure these records for me in such a
timely manner.
Along with these official records, I have my
Dad's Honorable Discharge Papers, his
documentation for his first Active Duty
assignment and release back to Inactive
Status, his discharge papers and copies of
his medical evaluations. I have a
beautifully decorated Service Record book my
Mother kept, however--a lot of information
is missing; a photo album of Hawaii and
Pearl Harbor prior to December 7, 1941 and
copies of several months of weekly
newsletters called the Beryl Breeze, from
the USS Beryl. It is my intention to
put as much of these treasures up on the
internet as I possibly can. So, keep
checking back to see my progress.
It has now
become a passion of mine to learn more about
this portion of my Dad's life and about the
historical events which took place during
the time of his Naval service. It is my
hope that I will be able to assist other
family members of these ship's crews to find
information they so want to know. On the
following pages you will find links to other
information about the ships, as well as
reunion sites, etc. To the best of my
ability I will keep the links current--as on
the web it sometimes happens that sites are
here today and gone tomorrow. I welcome any
correspondence with any of men/or their
families who served with my father or aboard
these ships.
Update-January,
2006:
I have been in email contact with a Mr. Curt
Clark, who is Secretary of a group called
4-Stack APD Veterans. He's now put me
in contact with several men/families of crew
members who served on
the USS Schley. Thank you Mr. Clark.
