How to make a Crinkly Glass Frame in just a few easy steps.

You can make some interesting 'frames' just by playing around with different tools and filters.

I am going to teach you one easy method but even on this, it can be swapped around and varied to your heart's content and your personal preferences.  You can vary the sizes of each border to suit the style of your picture...and leave them plain or make them fancy!  Try not to take away from your actual picture though, the idea is to compliment it or to show it off more.....it is very easy to get carried away with your creative artistic flair though...so be warned!  LOL

What you will need.

  • PSP 7     (I use version 7 but it can easily be achieved in 5 or 6)  a 30 day trial can be obtained from this link.

  • Eye Candy 3 & 4   (if you are lucky enough to have them both.

  • Texturizer   you can use the one in PSP 7 or the Adobe one if you have it.

  • Simple Filter

  • An image which you are going to work on...you can use the sample above, which I scanned from one of my birthday cards.   Right click and save to your folder.  You can leave the image as it is or apply the Water Colour method as I have done.

  • Glass Frame Settings   My Eye Candy 4 Glass and Swirl settings.

How to create your masterpiece! ;o)

Open the image that you wish to work from.  To be able to work with many of the tools in PSP, your image needs to be one with 16, Million Colours  (24 bit).  If you are having any problems being able to use any of the tools, check this out first.

  • Choose Colours > Increase Colour Depth >16 million colours 24 bit),  OR

  • Press <Shift> + <Ctrl> + <0>

Please note that most of the screen shots have been reduced to 80% for faster loading, so yours will look different to these.  Also remember to SAVE often!

Step 1.  Go to 'Window' at the top of your screen and choose 'Duplicate'...this will give you another copy to work from...now close the original.  It's always best to keep your originals for future use.

Step 2. Working with the copy of your original pic, we are going to add a border.... Select the darkest colour in your image...mine was #330B03 for the background  I chose the size of 3 for this one, but I normally work with a bigger number, it's up to you what you choose.    Isn't it always? LOL

Step 3.  Using your magic wand select your border... next go to 'Effects'....'Plugins'....Texturizer and choose 'Canvas' with default settings.

Then go back to Plugins and Eye Candy 4...Glass...Settings...'crinkleglass'.  Click Ok.

 Save!

Step 4. Swap the colours over in your styles palette so that the #BB80A9 is the background this time.  Add a border size 20 and select with magic wand .   Go to Plugins...EC 4: Swirl and choose the 'crinkly_swirl4' setting.

Plugins again....Simple Filter and choose...'Diamonds'.

Now back to EC 4...Swirl.....'crinkly_swirl4'. (which should be sitting in your EC4 'Swirl folder at this stage. *s*

For some reason or other that I haven't had time to investigate, my settings that I have saved in Eye Candy 3, are not showing up in the folder, so I can't zip them for you at this stage.  I will write these settings down for you as I have them, but don't forget to play around some...you may find something you like better. *s*

Next go to EC 3.....Swirl....Settings: Whirlpool Spacing: 101  Smear Length 10...    Twist 60...Streak Detail  100... Warp highlighted.

Now on to EC 3 JiggleSettings:  Bubble size 5:Warp Amount 40...Twist 0...Movement Type: Brownian Motion.

Step 5. Swap the colours over again so that you are back to the dark colour and repeat steps 2 & 3.  Voila!

It should be looking something like the title picture at the top of this page.  Unless of course you got carried away on your own creative path...which is what I tend to do. You will find some interesting effects by repeating the Jiggle filter a few times...you'll know when to stop!

Here are some variations that I 'stumbled' on to.

This was obtained by completing the last step of the tutorial and then going back to EC 4 Glass with the same settings as before except the Bevel width was changed to 50.83. I saved this as setting 'oohlala'.  I think that both the picture and the Frame have equal rights to first place...they both compliment each other.  In fact I am going out tomorrow to see if I can buy one just like it! *smiles*

This also was obtained by completing the last step of the tutorial and then going back to EC 4 Glass with the 'oohlala' setting, except the Bevel width was changed to 44.25 and the Bevel Profile changed to subtle hump.

Same steps as the above two, to the end of the tutorial...then EC 4 Glass...Clear glass....Bevel profile 'carve'  Bevel width...70.55.  I saved this setting as 'oohlala2'

This is very addictive so I must come to a halt and get to bed, as it is nearly time for me to get up.  I think you get the idea by now though. ;o)

Have Fun! and  Email if you have any problems!
