The idea for this tutorial came to me when I was doing a great tute for a computer desk, by Gina.  I started to play around with making the wood and using various filters etc, so thought I'd throw together some instructions on how to make your own various wood tiles.

There are many interesting things that you can use the wood tiles for, such as in the image above, which I put together using my samples... or as in the shapes and text in the  title image.  I would be interested to know what you can come up with. The more ideas the better! ;o)

What you will need:

Right click and save to your hard drive.

Now to get started!

1* Open up a transparent image 200 x 100 pixels and fill with the colour of
your choice or you can use my colour samples above. I used the second colour
of my samples as I am trying to achieve the look of my own desk. (Don't know if I'm going to do it though)

2* Add a layer.

3* With the and the 3rd colour #945410, use the settings below or try some of the other styles, draw some squiggly lines.  Then Merge your layers.

4* Go to 'Effects'.....'Blur'.....Motion Blur and use these settings.

5*  Add a Layer

6* Now we are going to add more colours but this time with our airbrush    Using the settings below experiment by using a each of the colours, don't need to add a layer for each one.  When you have finished doing this  do a 'motion blur' as before...using the settings above.

7* Go to Effects...Plugin filters....EC 4....Jiggle....apply with the settings below:

(or if you wish, try EC 3...its your preference, just play around with the settings).

8*  Now go to 'Texture'...'Texturizer' in the Plug in folder and apply with this setting:

9* We need to make it into a seamless tile now and I found that the best one, is the Quick Tile by 'Simple Filters'.  It can be done in 20/20...but having tried them both with this tile, I preferred the result in QT.

You can make many varied tiles by adding a knot or two, changing the colors.  I made the tile below from the above tile and going to 'Colors'...'Adjust'...'Curves'.   This is a neat method which I have only just learned about from my friend Gina...thanks pal!

This is the setting for it.

For this next one, I used the above tile and then applied  'Blintz' in the Simple filters...then used the Quick tile from there too.  Makes an interesting tile.

Now this next one was using the Jasc Texture filter...Number 70 pattern.

Colors for the tile below

This next one was achieved by adding the texture setting as above and then using the 'streamer' filter in Video Rave.  Then use the Quick Tile again to make it seamless.  Now add some dark lines using your draw tool, size 2, single line....holding down the shift key, draw three lines across your image.

These next samples were made by using red tones, and playing around with Jasc tools..I liked the bottom one so much that I made a tiled effect...ready to use in a floor or background fill.  Do I hear you saying, 'Background Fill'? LOL  Well have a look below (4 down) where I have an interesting background which was made by using this tile along with the Xenofex filter...Stain ...Ragged Edge...edge with 56...irregularity 100 and internal opacity 60.  I have been using this method a lot just lately with my graphics and greeting cards where I fill the center with suitable things to suit the recipient.  Try it...it's addictive! LOL

Okay, all though I have stuck to making the easy tiles, I think that is enough to get you going, just have fun playing with your filters and Jasc tools.   I saved all my tiles as bitmaps in my patterns folder, for future use....well, you never know when they will come in handy.  I'd love to see what you come up with!  Have fun!

Have Fun! and  Email if you have any problems!
